RE: Aux start switch and Magnetek 6345 converter

If you do replace that unit, I recommend the Xantrex as do many others for good reason. They are solid as a rock and power factor correction is a huge benefit. That plug and play kit should be fine too and it sure looks like a snap to install. Good luck.

RE: Battery equalizer

I would never say it doesn't work because I have not tried it but you have to admit the word "liquid" will reek of snake oil to some. Send us a link to the product so we can read about it.

RE: Parallax/Magnetek 7345 Shut Off Switch

I am going to replace it in the spring. I was thinking about the upgrade kit Bestconverter.com offers. I do not do a lot of boondocking to this point and want something "easy" to install. Would that be good choice?
Without a doubt that is the best thing you can do to your camper. Get a multi stage and you won't look back.

RE: CONVERTER question about voltage output. UPDATE

I agree with John but must add that the excerpt you quoted is full of wishful thinking. They just don't work that way even in todays technology. They don't know a load from a toad.
When the batteries are full, they just sit there at the same voltage and depending on temperature, will out gas the water.
You need one that scales back the VOLTAGE like the Xantrex, WFCO, PD and maybe there are others. Good luck.

RE: Progressive Dynamics PD-7648, how "smart" is the charger?

The owners manual states that the charger "will automatically bring your battery to a full charge condition then taper off to a trickle charge to maintain full charge condition." It also warns to check the battery water weekly. This leads me to believe it will still boil off some water and is not as "smart" as the newer system might be in maintaining the batteries when plugged in long term.
You just proved you are not gullible with those two contradictory statements. While I agree its important to check the water...weekly is not on my schedule of things to do. Mayyybe monthly. "Honey, its Tuesday, did you remember to check the water in the RV batteries when you took the trash out?"
You would save sooooo much heartache and time getting a modern switching converter, even if you stay with flooded batteries. If you want a simple DC life, get a modern converter and AGM batteries and you are semi retired from RV maintenance forever. Good luck.

RE: UPGRADING our INVERTER? How? Where? What? What else?

I've not seen a 100 Watt hard wire inverter in my life but don't doubt they exist. I guess you have one but most have one AC receptacle and no GFI till you get to about 600.
I can't see that useful for more than charging a cell phone or a tiny TV. You have some good advice but stopping at 1000 watts seems a little strange in my thinking because 600 would run anything not heat related but yet a 1000 will run nothing heat related like a hair dryer, toaster, micro, curling iron (yes I'm married)

RE: How to charge a battery as I'm driving?

I think we all like these stories because we can relate. Camping in the 70s was a test in ingenuity without a soul that knew what they were doing except running down truck batteries. You will need a battery and a way to charge it whether a converter or some other charger that you can run from an AC source.
You need two things...a generator and a converter/charger and you will be able to do the boondocking thing. Good luck.

RE: Echo Charger vs Trik-L-Start

I haven't seen the echo as low as $70 and doubt that but maybe. I like it but also like the Trik-L. The difference is the amps and like mentioned, 5 amps should be plenty. As far as i can tell the do the same thing. You can get free shipping at Bestconverter on either I think so that helps. Good luck.

RE: Trailer battery storage

Kind of hard to imagine how it would make any difference WHAT you carry in your trailer :H If you're taking the trailer JUST for the spare batteries it would certainly be a "spending dollars to save cents".
Maybe, maybe not. I can see some validity to this idea for extended stays and the TC community's storage challenges. Interesting idea and this trailer might also double as a UTV, motorcycle or general storage trailer.

RE: Shrink wrap a camper for storage????

I like it. I also like the business idea. Good for you.
The condensation is no more than not shrink wrapping so...
The military shrink wraps equipment headed overseas on ships to protect from the salt and other elements and with all of that electronic equipment in those machines, I doubt condensation is too much of a concern.

Congrats, did you get the generator option? TC camping darn near requires one.

RE: Dead house batteries.

Gale is correct unless you have a multi-stage charger capable of a bulk charge. You are probably seeing surface charge after running the engine or generator for awhile. After a few hours, it will dissipate and your back to square one. You probably neglected them and let them dry up. Don't know for sure but they do require maintenance unless you have/get AGM. Good luck.

Try coming in under goodsams or one of the other portals. RV.net is down the most but one of the others usually work fine.

I see they have a new model out. Was that $240? Probably still worth it but I think I read the lightning protection is part of it.

Another fan of pure sine wave here. I've had modified before and like mentioned, micro doesn't work right and many electronics don't work correct either. Good luck.

RE: New charger

Interesting Wolfe10 I know how I personally select how much charger to have as do you, but I'm wondering what formula the RV manufactures use.
I assume they are in the money saving mode but yet have to provide customers with something that will do the job.
I see these toy haulers for instance, that are bread to boondock and come with small single stage units. Wow, are they even thinking?

RE: New charger

I'm going to upgrade my single stage 60 amp charger to a multi-stage charger. I have two 6 volt golf cart batteries I'm trying to recharge.
My question
Should I just get another 60 amp charger (Xantrex multi-stage) or should I pop for an 80 amp? They also have a 40 amp charger but I'm not considering it.
Thanks!
Yes, that multi-stage 60 will do what you need and you have nothing else to worry about. Ten times the converter/charger of any single stage. Good luck.

RE: xantrex xadc install ?

I have done a couple of the XADC installs. It comes with foot brackets that you can use to secure it upside down like a monkey if you wanted to.
What do you have now? It might fit in any power center and if so, why not dial it in there and make the same connections. Sure isn't a hard job.

RE: Depth of battery Discharge, and battery break-in

By the way #1 - Regarding break-in of wet cell batteries, check this link:
http://www.amplepower.com/primer/break-in/index.html
From link: Assuming that your batteries have the expected Amp-hour capacity, the break-in discharge(s) will take about 20 hours. Let the discharge continue until the battery voltage reaches 10.5 Volts.
WOW. They suggest 100% discharge about five times to break in a battery. I can see 50 to 80% discharge but 100 seem like a bit much to me.
That's a very good point. I've seen numerous references to that site and get blown away some times. I'm not sure why anybody would suggest completely drain their battery and I bet if I looked hard enough, it might suggest not to store them on concrete floors.
I'm off for another look at that program of thinking over there.

RE: Intelli Power 9200 or Xantrex Truecharge 40

Xantrex makes great products in Canada. PD imports fair products from China.
I have used both and reliability as far as are they actually working has not been the issue. How they perform has made me a Xantrex fan.
